STEP 9 Add the wire perches

For the base, trace the cone onto the center of one 7” (18cm) square of wood. Cut a hole in the center, big enough to get a jigsaw blade into. Then, cut from the center to the traced line, and then around the circle to cut it out. Cut one 4” × 81⁄2” (10cm × 22cm) arch shape out of each of the two rectangular pieces in the same way. Paint a terra-cotta saucer with ivory paint, then gold metallic paint and patina. When it’s dry, seal it with clear sealer. Glue the wood for the base together as shown and paint and patina to match the cap. Set the cap piece onto the base and, using the holes in the corner as a guide, drill corresponding holes in the base. Hammer in medium nails to the outsides of the rectangles and along the top and the bottom of the bottom of the base. Drill holes through the sides of the rectangle pieces, about 2” (5cm) from the bottom, then string a length of clothesline wire through the holes and across the arch opening. Curl the ends up to secure.
